Fourth grade farm tour held Sept. 13

This year’s farm tour marked the 28th year the Greene County Farm Bureau has coordinated the annual event for fourth grade students. Brothers Connor and Cale Juergensen of Churdan, in their fourth year of hosting the event  for the county Farm Bureau, welcomed the students to their family farm northeast of Churdan where Connor and his wife Lindsay live. 

Eleven was the number of the day, with 111 students spending the morning in 11-minute blocks rounding 10 ag-related stations manned by volunteers.

The event was held Sept. 13. Fourth graders from both county schools attended.

Stations and the volunteers who manned them were:  drones – Chance Paup; hogs – Sophie Hansen, AMVC Management Services; biofuels – Paul Emrick, Iowa Corn Growers Association; Ag in the Classroom – Marcia Hagedorn, Boone/Greene County AITC coordinator; farm safety – Greene County  FFA students and Mark Naberhaus; sheep – Steve and Julie Karber; conservation/cover crops – Schyler Bardole; corn – Mike Finarty, Iowa Corn Growers Association; cow/calf – Cale Juergensen and Brent Schroeder;  and Farming & Finances – Ashley Johnston & Noah Juergensen, Home State Bank.

Greene County Farm Bureau was pleased to have FFA students Kayla Frederick, Sandra Dawson, Allison Fields, Madison Higgins, and Elise Badger attend and present at the farm safety station.  Instructor Raelyn Harris was also in attendance.

Randy Christensen, Austin Saddoris, and Wade Sohm from the Greene County Pork Producers grilled pork burgers for lunch, which were served with a bag of chips, cookie, and bottled water.  Home State Bank provided apples as a mid-morning snack. 

Farm Credit Services of America, Carroll office provided the funding for lunch and Bobbie Barry, Randy Deiber, Sam McLaughlin, Reiny Ostrander, Mark Miller, and Andy Carman from the Carroll office were in attendance and helped serve lunch. 

All students received a t-shirt to commemorate their day on the farm compliments of Greene County Farm Bureau and Farm Credit Services of America, Carroll office.  The shirts were designed and printed by ShineOn Designs in Jefferson.
